Asphalt makes occasional appearances in the annals of history. For example, asphalt was used by the ancient Egyptians to embalm mummies. The Persian word for asphalt is "moom," which is related to the English word "mummy."

One material commonly recommended for driveway and other residential paving applications is hot mix asphalt. This is essentially an engineered mix of aggregate with liquid asphalt cement that is both strong and durable.

For large paving operations like parking lots, asphalt is one of the best materials to use. Because it so highly flexible, it is able to withstand shifts in surface movement for years without any significant damage.
