Meet Garrett A. Morgan, American inventor, businessman, and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.—a true titan of American innovation and a hero of Black history.

Brother Morgan wasn’t just an inventor; he was a problem solver who saw a need and filled it—often at great personal risk.

• The Three-Position Traffic Signal
Before Morgan, traffic lights were just “Stop” and “Go.” After witnessing a horrific street accident, he patented a three-position signal that introduced the “caution” phase—an innovation that saves lives every single day.

• The Gas Mask (Safety Hood)
In 1914, he invented a “safety hood” to help firefighters breathe in smoke-filled environments. He famously used it himself to rescue workers trapped in a tunnel explosion beneath Lake Erie.
