Join us next week for the book launch of "The Urbanism Reader: Design, Technology, Culture, and the Future of Cities", edited by Stefan Al and SoAD professor Tom Verebes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing (2025)!

Stefan and Tom will introduce the volume and join SoAD Prof. Nader Vossoughian to moderate a discussion with invited speakers Stan Allen and Julia Watson, both contributors to this book. Bringing together architecture, landscape, and theory, the conversation reflects the anthology’s interdisciplinary scope, addressing urban design, technology, ecology, and culture while exploring how new methods and ideas are reshaping contemporary cities and future design practice.

All School of Architecture and Design events are hosted and supported by Dean Maria Perbellini
School of Architecture and Design Lectures and Events Chairs: Athina Papadopoulou and Nader Vossoughian
Poster Visual Design by Rozina Vavetsi
Poster Digital Adaptation by Emmanuel Marquet Melis

This afternoon, please join us for a premier lecture of the 2025 Spring Lecture & Events series: Building Environments of Care by Benedetta Tagliabue

Building Environments of Care explores how architecture can nurture well-being, transforming public spaces into havens of comfort, healing, and belonging. By embracing renaturalization, reuse, and human-centered design, we redefine the city as a place of care—where nature and built form intertwine to cultivate warmth and belonging in the urban fabric. Through thoughtful materiality and organic forms, architecture can evoke a sense of home in the city, where nature and built environments intertwine. By reimagining spaces with empathy, architects can transform cities into nurturing landscapes that support both individual healing and collective well-being.

Benedetta Tagliabue (Co-founder And Principal Architect, Embt Architects) is an internationally renowned architect. She is the co-founder with Enric Miralles (1955–2000) of EMBT Architects, as well as the founder and president of the Fundació Enric Miralles. She is known for iconic works like the New Scottish Parliament Building in Edinburgh 2004, the Santa Caterina Market in Barcelona 2005, and the Spanish Pavilion for Expo Shanghai 2010. Recent works include Ferrara’s San Giacomo Apóstolo Church 2019 and Kálida Sant Pau Centre – Part of Maggie’s Centre Network in Barcelona in 2019 and leads many on-going projects worldwide Centro Direzionale di Napoli 2024, Fudan Univeristy, in Shangai 2025 and Century Square also in Shangai 2025.

The School of Architecture & Design at NYIT is pleased to announce the 2025 Spring Public Lecture and Events Series, featuring a variety of guest speakers, book launches, symposiums, and events!

WORLDS Un/DESIGNED: Unscripted, Atypical, Unnatural, & Uncontrolled

Conventions have long shaped design and architecture. Norms in planning, material use, graphic standards, and spatial ideas reveal how designers approach world-building, often reinforcing codified views of spaces, bodies, and environments that limit more inclusive futures. The SoAD AY 24-25 lecture and event series, Worlds Un/Designed, seeks to deconstruct these conventions by challenging stereotypes in design practices, urban systems, technological dependencies, and conceptions of the natural vs. unnatural. The Series will address the exclusions embedded in our constructed environments, focusing on ecology, sustainability, autonomy, accessibility, and inclusion. By critically reflecting on conventions, Worlds Un/Designed invites to reimagine healthier, alternative futures yet to be designed.

Hosted by and with the support of SoAD Dean Maria Perbellini. Organized by the New York Tech SoAD Lectures & Events Committee (Chair: Athina Papadopoulou). Poster design by Ezio Blasetti.
