As most do, I clock my year based on the same cycle of holidays, seasons, and turning points. Ten years ago, between February 12 through February 27, 2005, The Gates tempted millions of people to visit Central Park. The 7,500 steel structures in this epic public artwork – “gates” holding deep saffron-colored fabric – lined 23 winding miles through the iconic park.

According to the artists, the work used 5,390 tons of steel, 315,491 feet (96 km) of vinyl tubing, 99,155 square meters of fabric, and 15,000 sets of brackets and hardware.
