I was walking along the beach one evening during the week. Most people had already enjoyed their time and left. A couple of beach guards were sitting on their vehicle, watching the waves. The beach was almost empty, and the sun was setting beautifully behind them. I asked if they could move their vehicle so I could take a photo with the sea in the background. One of them responded, “I have to keep an eye on the waves—I can’t turn my back on my duty.” Often unseen and unthanked, their vigilance is what makes our carefree beach days possible.
