The Trump administration announced a major policy shift forcing green card applicants to use consular processing abroad instead of adjusting status within the U.S. This change impacts roughly 780,000 applicants annually, though widespread confusion remains. Nearly half of these applicants come from countries already facing U.S. entry bans, leading officials to quickly walk back the initial announcement by promising upcoming exemptions and acknowledging the policy only applies where overseas consular processing is actually available. New Restrictions on I-485!!!

USCIS announces a policy for green-card applicants to apply at U.S. consulates abroad, making I-485 Adjustment of Status (AOS) to receive the green-card within the US only possible under “extraordinary circumstances". This change impacts all applicants whether using employment or relative based routes including applicants marrying US Citizens.

Implications also could be for current pending I-485s.
