They sought justice through the . They paid a heavy price.

After documenting human rights violations in Burundi 🇧🇮 and engaging with the UN Committee against Torture, Armel Niyongere, Dieudonné Bashirahishize, Vital Nshimirimana and Lambert Nigarura were disbarred or suspended from practising law and forced into exile.

But the reprisals did not stop there. Criminal proceedings, life sentences in absentia, frozen assets and ongoing restrictions continue to affect their lives and families today.

Despite this, they continue their fight for accountability and justice.

Their story is a reminder that no one should be punished for engaging with the 🇺🇳

🇪🇬 After exposing torture and other human rights violations, Basma Mostafa was forced to flee. Yet from exile, she continues documenting abuses and engaging with the . For that, she is facing surveillance, cyberattacks, harassment and threats.

But Basma's story is not only about transnational repression. It is also about persistence.

Today, she continues her human rights work, supports fellow activists in exile, and advocates for accountability through international mechanisms. She co-founded the Law and Democracy Support Foundation e.V. and is the Director of Programs.
