A peaceful summer evening in England… suddenly turned into one of the worst air disasters in British history.

On 22 August 1985, crowds gathered at Manchester Airport to watch a busy holiday flight prepare for takeoff when British Airtours Flight 28M suffered a catastrophic engine failure during departure.

Within seconds, flames tore through the aircraft as thick black smoke filled the cabin. Witnesses described terrified passengers trying to escape while firefighters raced across the runway through exploding fuel and intense heat.

Emergency crews smashed open exits as smoke covered the airport and shocked travelers watched the disaster unfold from nearby terminals. The fire spread so rapidly that the aircraft was engulfed in minutes.

The Manchester Airport disaster killed 55 people and permanently changed aircraft fire safety regulations around the world.

Because this wasn’t just an airport emergency… it became one of Britain’s most haunting aviation tragedies.
