Announcing: Irreplaceable America spotlighting 10 U.S. heritage sites and the National Park System

On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the , WMF’s Irreplaceable America initiative recognizes 10 at-risk heritage sites that reflect the history of the United States.

From landmarks of public health and colonial architecture to sites central to Black history, Indigenous heritage, and artistic experimentation, the initiative spotlights places facing urgent preservation needs.

This Pride Month, discover the extraordinary story of Keith Haring’s altarpiece and its Parisian home 🏳️‍🌈

Since the 1980s, The Church of Saint Eustache has offered a welcoming space to Paris’s LGBT community. At the height of the AIDS epidemic, the church stood against prejudice—providing support and assistance to those affected by the disease when many were met with fear and rejection.

In 2021, WMF began restoring the church’s delicate wall paintings and improving the visitor experience at the site. The final phase of work, celebrated earlier this month, brings new attention to Saint Eustache’s legacy of advocacy by sharing the story of its Haring masterpiece and conserving the chapel around it.

"The altarpiece shows the compassion that can exist among all of us—and hopefully that will be a message for the future,” said WMF Trustee Anthony V. Thompson, whose support made the project possible.

New Vatican Partnership Brings Major Conservation Initiative to the Loggia of Raphael:

A landmark partnership between the Governorate of Vatican City State, World Monuments Fund, and the Stephen A. Schwarzman Foundation will help safeguard one of the great treasures of the Italian High Renaissance: the Loggia of Raphael in the Vatican Palace.

Together, the partners will support a major conservation initiative using innovative laser-cleaning technology to remove centuries of accumulated grime while protecting the Loggia’s fragile painted surfaces.

The project also includes a multi-year, internationally accredited training program in wall-painting conservation, led by WMF in collaboration with the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI), with hands-on training in Italy, academic coursework in Switzerland, and regular visits to the Loggia conservation site.

Through this collaboration, the partners are advancing the preservation of an irreplaceable masterpiece while helping train the next generation of conservators.
