There's a quiet realization many capable leaders come to.
They're not failing. They're not behind. They're not missing a skill.
The role they're in has simply evolved—without being intentionally redesigned.
Responsibilities have accumulated. Invisible work has become structural. Decision authority hasn't kept pace.
This is the moment leaders stop trying to cope better—and start asking better questions.
What does this role need to be now?
That question isn't about self-protection. It's about leadership.
If you're at this point, I work with senior leaders navigating exactly this kind of inflection.
A conversation is a good place to start.

There’s a quiet kind of burnout many capable leaders experience.
On paper, the role looks reasonable.
The workload isn’t extreme.
Nothing is obviously “wrong.”
And yet—there’s a constant sense of carrying more than what was ever named.
This often happens through role drift.
Competence leads to trust.
Trust leads to responsibility sticking.
Over time, leaders absorb legacy work, emotional labor, and decision-making authority simply because someone has to hold it.
None of this shows up in a job description.
All of it shapes how leadership capacity is used.
Intentional leadership begins when leaders pause—not to push harder or recover—but to clarify. To ask: What is this role actually designed to hold now?
Because when roles evolve without being redesigned, even the most capable leaders end up stretched in ways that don’t serve them—or the organization.
Before taking on more, it’s worth asking:
What am I carrying that was never explicitly designed—and what is it costing the organization if it stays invisible?

In the business world, we should take a page from our science labs days in how to approach work. Experimentation, I contend, is one of the best ways to continually learn, think of a problem from a different angle and get creative in actually solving it, and foster innovation.
