Annu Palakunnathu Matthew will be speaking on her series, The Unremembered, on Friday, October 10, 2025 at 6:30pm at the Lee Miller Gallery @ Farleys House and Gallery, East Sussex, England.

Matthew’s talk is in conjunction with the exhibition, New Stories, Women in Photography, India (on through October 31st).

Within her exploration of unremembered histories, the series Sheltered: The Italians who saved the escaped Indian Prisoners of War during World War II, Matthews illuminates the inspiring history of Italian families in Abruzzo who risked their lives to shelter escaped Indian Prisoners of War during World War II, despite differences in race and language. Projecting the collected family photographs of Italian families and Indian soldiers on the walls and streets of these towns and homes animates the site of this lost history. It brings the forgotten memories into the present.

“This history becomes increasingly poignant as wars continue to rage around the globe. In an era marked by division and hostility, the bravery of these Italians underscores the potential for individuals to transcend cultural and national boundaries. This story and the research involved gives one hope in humanity.” Annu Palakunnathu Matthew, 2025

New Stories, Women in Photography, India is curated by Niyatee Shinde and Ami Bouhassane with Ziip Foundation. Additional support by David Haberstich is much appreciated.

From August 3 to September 21, 2025, the halls of the Palazzo Ducale Orsini-Colonna in Tagliacozzo (AQ) will host the twelfth edition of Contemporanea, an event that has established itself in the Italian contemporary art scene for its commitment to the cultural valorization of local areas. Curated by Cesare Biasini Selvaggi, the exhibition is divided into two sections that compare the work of Concetta Baldassarre and Annu Palakunnathu Matthew, two artists from different generations, geographies, and approaches, yet united by a lucid and profound reflection on the power of art as a tool for preserving, revealing, and reinterpreting history.

Special thanks to MT /
Maria Teresa Capacchione, Cesare Biasini & Emanuele Moretti for this extraordinary opportunity.

Congratulations to Annu, who continues to delve into our past and create contemporary spaces where we can expand our knowledge and celebrate our connections.
