Four Dominican Academy students traveled to China this June, exploring STEM innovation, visiting historic and cultural sites, mixing cultures, and experiencing folks traditions first-hand as participants in the Ricci-Guangqi Young Scholars Program—one of D.A.'s global immersion programs offered in collaboration with and Nanjing Foreign Language School (NFLS).
Over the course of two weeks, our students gained insight into China's unique blend of ancient tradition and modern innovation, from visiting the world-renowned Shanghai Museum and learning about transportation infrastructure at the Nanjing Vocational Institute of Railway Technology, to exploring the winding alleyways of Tianzifang and the historic beauty of Yu Garden. Along the way, they experienced local markets, Buddhist temples, historic neighborhoods, and meaningful examples of East-West cultural exchange.
In Nanjing, students took classes and did group work with their NFLS Ricci Program counterparts, whose families hosted students for the week. During a separate portion of the trip, they joined the .institute’s CI-100 Youth Study Abroad centennial initiative, visiting cultural and historic sites in Shanghai and throughout the Zhejiang province, while also serving as delegates at the International Youth Forum alongside peers from four other countries.
More than a trip, this was a bold opportunity for D.A. students to build global perspectives, form new friendships with their classmates and host families, and deepen their understanding of another culture that has shaped our interconnected world.
