We are thrilled to launch 🎉[ ]! 🎉 Over the coming two weeks, our campaign will showcase a series of enlightening statistics across various categories, complemented by captivating student portraits from different schools.

Our focus today zeroes in on the crucial theme of confidence in pursuing studies in technology and related fields. Behind every groundbreaking technological advancement, there stands a united team of allies. These individuals champion each other’s capabilities, cultivating an atmosphere where confidence flourishes on the foundation of mutual respect and collective achievements.

We invite you to delve into the statistics and photographs we’ve shared. The statistics, in aggregate, are from an anonymous survey taken by 500+ computer science students across 10 schools. 🏫 Each student chooses a statistic based on the portion of their school’s population who took the survey to be added to their portrait. Want to plan an advocacy project and bring the Percentage Project to your school? 🚨 We are now recruiting Campus Directors for the 2024-25 cycle! 🚨 This is a unique leadership opportunity to make a difference on your campus and work closely with department leadership. We have worked with many student organizations such as women in computing or Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers in the past and delivered successful campaigns across 15+ schools country-wide. Must be enrolled in a secondary academic institution and have completed first year by September 2024.

Our Mission

The Percentage Project is a 501c(3) nonprofit organization that aims to foster inclusivity and belonging at universities nationwide through data-driven advocacy. Our vision is to help every person of every background embrace their diversity and feel a sense of belonging in the field that they pursue.

Our mission, thereby, is to build a movement that:

brings to light the experiences of post-secondary education students in computer science-related fields,

encourages reflection and conversation on the state of students of all backgrounds,

and uses data to drive progress that fosters a culture of inclusion and belonging in post-secondary education.

Our goals are twofold: 1. to act as a non-institution, third-party whose role is to use data analysis to shed light on diversity and inclusion in Computer Science and Engineering departments, and 2. to promote reflection and conversation on the state of students from any and all backgrounds in these fields.

In 2018, the project began as an artistic, visual outlet for data collected from an anonymous survey of Computer Science students each year. By showcasing data alongside the faces of these students, we aim to encourage reflection on shared experiences, the situations of minorities affected by instances of microaggressions and discrimination, and possibilities of alleviating these instances.

Over the last few years, we have been developing and implementing our own approach to data-driven advocacy. By collecting climate data on students studying computer science-related fields, The Percentage Project analyzes similarities and differences in student experience amongst groups of different backgrounds. The results feed into a three-pronged approach to advocacy.

Students

We are fundamentally a student-driven movement. We believe that students should have a say in actively shaping their educational experience, and so they should be informed. Every year, we work with student leaders to run a social media campaign that puts faces to these statistics. By creating portraits with the statistics, we create an online gallery that sheds light on the challenges of underrepresented students and inspires the community to take action.

Departments

It is critical that our data drives progress. Thus, we believe in keeping departments informed with updated and detailed analysis of the climate at their campuses. Identifying key areas and challenges will help fuel data-driven decisions that effectively alleviate the circumstances and eventually close the gap.

Everyone

We are stronger together. Our focus is on connecting campuses from all over to advocate for equity in education. And it’s not a competition - it’s a collaborative effort between schools towards a common goal: diversity and inclusion. In this vein, we aggregate all data from all participating campuses to form a benchmark that drives accountability in technology education.
