PREMIERE at Moving Image New York

Jennifer Dalton "New Trick" by Winkleman Gallery

New Trick is a video work chronicling Dalton’s attempt over the course of one year to learn to execute a standing backflip. A martial-arts personal trainer she knows once remarked in passing that he could teach anyone to do a standing backflip in one year. Dalton stewed for months over his off-hand boast before deciding she had to take him up on it. The idea struck her as a way out of a comfort zone that she had settled into as an artist and as a person. New Trick is a three-channel installation with a sequence of short video segments of weekly training sessions with the trainer as Dalton gets closer and closer to her goal and either succeeds or fails at it.
