Images of empty restaurants - taken before Covid-19 - don’t resonate the same today - where the mood seems closer to the sublime disease prone cypress swamps of the 1800’s, where to haunting staccato
echo of the ivory billed woodpecker cut through the silence. Torst restaurant - by HoME NYC- features old growth swamp cypress as decorative walls classing and tables, adding texture and tonal variation to the interior design.

Stay at home orders with nearby excursions may be the best homage and reclamation for the earth, at least this year. This recent piece in the NY Times

Our Story

Sawkill Lumber is a Brooklyn based supplier of antique and vintage woods, serving architects, designers and fine woodworkers in the New York City area.

Our woods are sourced locally: from barns, industrial sites, houses, apartments, and bars. We intentionally seek out a diverse range of colors, grains, sizes and patinas.

There is always a tension between the past and the present, between the used and the unused. At Sawkill, we are aware, and respectful of that tension. We try and bring the past into the future, not appropriating history, but continuing a tradition of using natural materials for sustainable construction.
