Hitting a big milestone this month, with my son is turning 10 -- a decade of being a mom! Time really does fly. I took him to the dentist the other day and he has only a few baby teeth left.
Reflecting on 10 years of being mom in NYC, I have much about which to be thankful. NYC has its challenges, especially over the last several months, but even as a rising 10 year old he has seen so much here so that he has a real sense of perspective about life.
To be clear, he's a typical rising 10-year old but there is so much else to him, especially his compassion and his "facts". He's a history buff, knows practically everything about all the magnificent buildings of the world, and most often is our source of general knowledge-type information. I will ask my husband something and he'll be like "ask K". He's taken time to educate himself of important personalities in African history, like Mansa Musa, Mandela, the pharaohs etc., and his Ugandan roots. Even though his little sister sometimes appears to have one mission in life, to get him in trouble, he for the most part will find a way to calm her down. He's a real sweetheart.
I feel like it has taken "a village" to get through 10 years of motherhood. My little sister Maria, who lives a block away from me is a constant presence and my little brother, my cousin Viv and my many mommy friends have been part of a strong support system, and of course my hubby (now that he can't really travel for work😊). Also thanks to technology, my parents and other siblings are a Whatsapp away.
I'm an emotional mess. The years have gone by so fast and this year he's looking and acting more like a pre-teen grown but he will always be my baby.
