at The University of Wisconsin Eau Claire’s Centennial Hall, room 2916

This talk is part of the public programming for Flores Nocturnas (Blooming at Night), a solo exhibition by Mexico-city based, multimedia artist , which includes works that envision fantastical scenes centering brown trans femme pleasure, kinship, and futurity. During the talk, Moreno and poet Gustavo Barahona-Loṕ ez, whose oeuvre includes reflections on Latinx masculinities and growing up in a Mexican immigrant home, will discuss how identity (e.g., gender, national) and the politics of representation in the arts influence the content and reception of their work.

Flores Nocturnas (Blooming at Night) is a solo exhibition featuring drawings, paintings, collages, and mixed media installations by Mexico City based artist Sofia Moreno. This body of work drags and melds Mesoamerican iconography with q***r nightlife artefacts and self-portraiture to create surreal vistas that envision brown trans femme pleasure, kinship, and futurity. A central theme of the exhibition is fantasy; that which is projected onto and performed by the trans femmes who inspire Moreno’s artwork; namely her transcestors and trans sisters working the streets. This lush and sensuous collection of art, while haunted by the harsh socio-economic conditions that make trans life precarious, gestures toward an immanent utopia with brown trans femmes at its center.

Flores Nocturnas will be on view at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Foster Gallery from March 25-April 17. The reception will take place on March 28, 6pm-7:30pm. A gallery talk with the artist and curator Rae Langes will take place on Thursday, April 11, 4pm-5pm in Haas Fine Arts Center 101.

Prior to the exhibition opening, Moreno will be an artist-in-residence on UW-EC’s campus (February 26-March 22). She will hold open studio hours on Fridays, 10am-12pm, in Haas Fine Arts Center 113, during which students, staff, faculty, and the broader Chippewa Valley community can gain a glimpse into her artistic practice.
