The General Services Administration has just announced that Spacesmith LLP, in joint venture with Davis Brody Bond LLP, will design a new Land Port of Entry at Highgate Springs, VT. This is currently one of the busiest land ports of entry in New England and is expected to get even busier when Canada completes construction of its Autoroute A35. The project is intended to create a more welcoming gateway into and out of the U.S. with a focus on increased capacity, better security, and a higher level of environmental responsibility. When completed, the new port will improve public and U.S. Department of Homeland Security-Customs and Border Protection officer safety, as well as expedite crossing times for the traveling public and businesses that rely on binational commerce.

The goal of 30/30 is to provide learning opportunities to help these designers advance their professional knowledge and provide them with inspiration to continue to excel.

Penn Station - Past, Present, Future, a blog by Marc Gordon.
As an architect and a life-long New Yorker, I often wondered how the busiest transportation hub in the western hemisphere, which accommodates more than 650,000 travelers daily, became such an inhospitable space. It seemed particularly tragic given that one of the grandest trains stations ever built once stood on the very same site.
