Redheads represent fewer than 2% of the global population, yet they are disproportionately represented among patients who require supplemental anesthesia, report higher postoperative pain, and—according to published data—are more than twice as likely to avoid dental care altogether. Redheads have a MC1R allele variant that needs to be recognized and understood. The question is not whether the redheaded patient experiences pain differently.
