9/11 A Day That Will Be With Us Always
September 11, 2001 was a day that changed the lives of thousands of Americans. On that infamous day, I was sitting in my 3rd grade class in downtown Jersey City. I recall feeling the school building shake a little and hearing an airplane pass over head. At the time, I thought it was okay given how close I lived to Newark Airport. About an hour later, my mom comes to pick me up early with tears of fear in her eyes. I didn't ask questions. The next thing she did was drop me off at my grandmother's which was on the first floor of the brownstone we lived in and on the small kitchen TV I saw the unthinkable. Both towers, engulfed in flames.
I remember days later, going to the water front at Exchange Place in Jersey City with my mom, brother and a few others for a vigil. While walking through the masses of people praying, we happened upon a sea of people surrounding a ferry. Atop a short concrete wall stood a man, asking for volunteers to help find people trapped under the now collapsed towers. With ferocity in my eyes, I looked at my mom and said "Can I go help them mommy?" Tears filled her eyes, and with a disappointed look on her face she explained to me how at 7-years old I couldn't. I felt defeated. Useless in a time where people needed help.
From a very early age I wanted to serve in the military. As early as 5 years old if my memory serves correct. 9/11 further fueled my commitment and desire to serve. My mother at the time worked at Bank of New York (now Bank of New York Mellon) as a Vice President of Share Owner Services, right there on Greenwich St. Every year she would take my brother and I to the observatory of the South Tower. It was always an amazing experience. We would eat, grab souvenirs and head over to the binoculars where we could look down on all of NYC going about their lives. On that fateful day, my mother decided not to go into work after hearing my brother pray the night before so we could stay home. My brothers prayer was only half answered but thankfully so.
An image that sticks with me to this day is what if my mom went to work that day or changed her mind about staying home. Given the time she dropped us off at school and the time it would take her to make it to work, she would have been either trapped under the towers, one of the thousands affected by the aftermath, or worse. I recall one face of the BNY building being damaged and covered with a HUGE American flag after they reopened before finishing its repairs. The flag being a staunch reminder of how united as a nation we had become. To think I would have lost my mom as a result of the attack never sat well with me, along with the 2,799 lives that were lost that day.
When I was 17 years old, I enlisted as an 0311 - Rifleman in the United States Marine Corps and deployed to Afghanistan and all over Europe during my 5 year enlistment. At the time, I told my parents it's either you sign the waiver or you delay the inevitable. They saw the determination in my eyes and caved. To this day, 9/11 is a somber day for me. And on this day, I want to and will continue to express my condolences for everyone who was lost as a result of the attack. From the 2,977 lives that day, the over 1,400 affected by the exposure to toxins, the 6,840 fellow service members that never came home during Operation Iraqi and Enduring Freedom, to those that lost their battle at home as a result of the unseen wounds. I've lost many brothers and friends as a result of 9/11. But I stand fast with them in mind and continue to push forward as should we all, together.
God Bless America. God Bless You All.
