In preparation for their upcoming visit to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 4th and 5th grade students welcomed Annie MacRae, Harlem Academy trustee and former Met docent, for a lesson on African art and culture.
Students explored the symbolism, materials, and purpose behind works they will soon see at the museum, including the "Ci Wara headdress" and "Helmet crest from a nja masquerade." They learned how African art often serves an important role within communities and. They also discussed the traditions of specialized artists and guilds whose skills were passed down through generations.
