Young women in male-dominated fields? Yes!

In a remote village in White Nile State in Sudan, young women like 16-year-old Umn and her friends are defying norms to build career skills in mechanics.

Together they have repaired cars, tuk tuks and motorcycles across the village.

“Many people believe this field is not suitable for us, but we were determined and pursued it,” Umn says.

The group’s growing reputation is not only improving their income but also reshaping perceptions in their community.

In Egypt, Malak is learning alongside her classmates with support that helps her keep moving forward.

After being born with health conditions, she went through multiple surgeries and long recovery periods. She started school later than her peers and faced learning difficulties from the first grade.

Her mother, Sharbat, believed Malak could catch up with the right support.

Today, Malak attends class with her peers, then goes to a UNICEF-equipped resource room, where educational tools, games and trained teachers help her practise reading, basic maths and other skills.

“I can see her improving and she’s quickly picking up skills from those around her,” her mother says. “I feel proud of her when we are walking somewhere and I find her reading words around.”

Sharbat used to carry Malak to school every day and sit with her in the resource room, so she could help her continue learning at home.

For her, Malak’s progress is a reminder that children with disabilities and learning difficulties should never be underestimated.

“I wish no one loses hope in their son or daughter.”

With the right support, children like Malak can learn, grow and take their place in the classroom.
