In 2023, a nutrition volunteer trained by The Hunger Project established a Mothers' Club in Bujruk Mahmudpur, Bangladesh. This club of 30 women meet regularly to learn about hunger and how they can create a better future for their families.

For Jaleshwari, these gatherings have been transformative. She was married at 17 and had her son one year later. She is responsible for managing her household and bringing in an income, as her husband is unable to work. Even with her busy schedule, she makes time to attend meetings regularly.

One day the club learned about homestead vegetable gardening and how it can be used to ensure year-round nutrition and even create an income stream.

Through additional workshops with The Hunger Project, she how to grow vegetables organically using natural, low-cost fertilizers. With the support of her son and her husband, Jaleshwari began preparing organic compost, cultivating the soil, making garden beds, and planting seeds. She established a garden with a variety of vegetables such as red spinach, spinach, bottle gourd, and chili. The freshness and quality of her produce quickly attracted attention. She not only used the vegetables for her family’s consumption but also sold them locally and shared them with her neighbors.

Her success soon inspired others in the community. Neighbors approached her to learn about organic farming techniques. Jaleshwari willingly shared her knowledge, provided seeds, and guided them in establishing their own gardens.

Today, Jaleshwari’s family and community enjoys improved nutrition, better health, and increased income. Jaleshwari is now a confident entrepreneur looking for the next opportunity to create an even brighter future.
