A musical can be worthwhile just because it’s entertaining, but what if it’s also saving human culture? What if pop song medleys and dance numbers are also repositories for everything we know about ourselves? What do we make of them then?
Those questions shape the third act of Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play, a new show by Anne Washburn that’s now in previews at Playwrights Horizons.
TDF Stages looks at Bart Simpson and the meaning of life.

The National Asian American Theater Company's (NAATCO) production of Clifford Odets's Awake and Sing!, which officially opens on Wednesday at Walkerspace, hinges on the collisions of a family that's forced to be close-knit, whether they like it or not. The house is arranged in two rows of seats on either side of the dining room and living room set, so you feel dropped in the middle of the action.
For Stephen Fried, who's directing NAATCO's revival, placing the audience up close underlines why the Depression-era show still feels relevant. "I think there's a challenge in doing justice to the world that the work came out of and also making the audience viscerally aware of the immediacy of the themes that are being discussed," he says. "So for me to put the audience right in the middle of the dynamics of this family made it much easier for an audience member to just be a part of those dynamics. I never wanted it to be something that we were looking at. I wanted it to be something that we were in the midst of."

Slut, Arts Effect All-Girl Theater Company's latest play, runs August 19-25 in FringeNYC. Co-written and co-directed by Cappiello and McInerny, it follows a fictional girl named Joey who gets drunk, gets in a cab with some boys, and then gets sexually assaulted. Soon enough, she's hounded by social media accounts of what supposedly happened and a growing assumption that everything was her fault.
