If you know me at all, you know one thing — I’m not afraid to share a few vulnerable thoughts. Sometimes when I share them people assume I’m sad or unhappy. While that isn’t always untrue, what I truly am is grateful that God has given me a voice… a voice to speak truth not just over myself, but hopefully into the lives of others. The other evening I was sitting in my new home office waiting for it to be time to go out. I was excited for the night. Then a text came through… plans cancelled. No real explanation. Just like that. I sat there disappointed and honestly a little angry. And in that moment one word hit me loud and clear: PRIORITY. As women we tend to make everyone else our priority. Our spouses. Our kids. Our friends. Our jobs. Even our pets. But what about YOU? Where do you fall in that equation? Sitting there with tears in my eyes I realized something… for years I have put myself last. So that night I wiped my tears, changed my clothes, grabbed a friend and went out anyway. Why should I miss the experience just because someone else didn’t see it as important? It was important to me. Here’s what I’m learning: Showing up for yourself is hard. Showing up for yourself sometimes means saying no to something else. Showing up for yourself means letting go of guilt. Showing up for yourself means allowing yourself to feel. And showing up for yourself means accepting that YOU are human. You have needs. You have desires. You have dreams. And it’s okay to honor them. A friend recently told me her counselor said something simple but powerful: “Date yourself.” You don’t need someone else to fill the silence in order to show up for YOU. Sometimes the most important relationship you will ever build is the one you have with yourself.
