They say the caretaker never really left.
Newark cemetery tour dares you to find out.
Mount Pleasant Cemetery Hosts
The Lantern Keeper’s Walk
Some say a lantern still moves through Mount Pleasant Cemetery at night, long after the gates close. Neighbors call it the Lantern Keeper, but no one can explain who lights it.
This October, Friends of Historic Mount Pleasant invites the public to follow that light. The Lantern Tour on October 24 leads small groups through the cemetery's oldest section, Mausoleum Row, where local legend says a few residents haven't entirely settled in. Guides share stories passed down about the tombs: the mausoleum door that won't stay shut, the carved angel whose face locals swear changes expression, and the family plot no groundskeeper will tend after sundown.
Tickets are $33 and include the Lantern Tour and light bites at the All-Souls Café on the premises. W**e and craft b**r is available for a small donation with identification. The tour is recommended for adults 13 and older. All proceeds support the preservation of Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
Is it all true? We won't say. That's for you to find out.
