Newton City Council Ward 4 Debate 10/26/2023

How do we put the city of Newton on a firmer financial footing? A crucial question considering the city’s budget gaps, recent overrides, unfunded pension liability, and the increased demand on city services, schools, and infrastructure that will come with the ~15,000 residential units proposed by the planning department. My opponent and I have very different approaches. I suggest bolstering our commercial tax base while my opponent suggests raising resident property taxes.

I encourage you to watch the debate and learn more about the differences between myself and my opponent.

Concerned about traffic in Newton? So am I!
The city is considering adding significantly more housing (approximately 15,000 units) to Newton through the proposed zoning overlay. My opponent and I have very different views on how new development will impact traffic. Watch the Ward 4 debate below.

The most pressing issue facing Newton right now is balancing growth while keeping what we love about Newton.

Newton is facing significant growth in coming years due to a new state law that requires Newton to allow a 25-percent increase in the number of housing units. I think we can support new development but do so in a way that maintains trees and open space, limits traffic and keeps our unique network of charming village centers. But we can only do that if our City Council puts residents first when considering zoning changes and new development projects. As ward councilor, I will always put the interests of my constituents over the profits of private developers, even if that means demanding a smaller project or more open space.

Can I count on your vote on November 7th?

Hi, I'm Randy Block and I am running to be your Ward 4 City Councilor. To learn more about the differences between myself and my opponent, I encourage you to watch the recent Area Council debate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0QX6BTWzGw

Hi, I'm Randy Block and I am running for Ward 4 Newton City Council.

Newton is known as “The Garden City,” with our ample green spaces, charming architecture, and network of walkable village centers. These attributes are what drew my wife and me to Newton decades ago, and that is true for many Ward 4 residents as well; I know this because they have told me so as I have knocked on doors over the last several months.

As our city evolves, it’s important to ensure that new developments align with the values that make Newton unique. The Newton City Council is currently considering rezoning our Village Centers in a way that I believe represents an extreme change, with heights and density far beyond what is required by state law. That’s why I support the position of Ward 4 Councilors Chris Markiewicz and Lenny Gentile, who advocate for a more balanced approach.

By working together, we can ensure that Newton does our part to increase housing supply, but remains a place where community and character go hand in hand with thoughtful development. On November 7th, your vote is more crucial than ever. Stand with me to safeguard the qualities that define Newton as the Garden City we cherish and ensure the enduring vitality of our neighborhoods and village centers for years to come.
