“Spiritual, cosmic, and groove-happy” - Bandcamp
Danny Mekonnen (dragonchild) calls it world-building: “What can you put in a world, so that it feels like the world? [The world] has to be large, but it has to be bounded, right? It has to have some shape, otherwise it won’t feel real.”
The world in question is a composite of two artists — Ethiopian-American saxophonist D.A. Mekonnen and Indian-American percussionist/producer Ravish Momin. They share a love for African music and its infinite potential for experimental expression. The music swirls out of nostalgia for their cultural heritage and a never-ending quest for a bigger, more diverse musical picture.
On the first night of collider!Fest, they’ll offer two sets of music in Bombyx’s intimate Peacock Room. Think Pharaoh Sanders, Flying Lotus, Ethiopiques; a Love Supreme remixed with heavy beats. The vibe is transcendent.

Beat-maker, rabble-rouser, and ecstatic singer with a wide range of influences, from her Puerto Rican and Cuban roots to R&B, electronica, hip-hop, and jazz. “I think my signature sound is a collage of different musics coming together on a visceral level, connecting the dots with my voice and imagination.”

This is the sound of Joropo. This is the sound of Mafer Bandola’s Pipiris Nights.
If you’re Venezuelan, it sounds like home. If you’re Mexican, it might sound like son jarocho to you — they are musical cousins, both in 6/8 time. And if you’re completely unfamiliar, well — joropo sounds like energy and life — rhythmic, percussive, and thundering.
Pipiris Nights is a monthly portable community house for Joropo in NYC. The word literally means ‘party’ in Venezuela. It is a diaspora home for Venezuelan ex-pats, though everyone is invited of course. For Mafer, who permanently relocated to NYC recently, it is a passion project of the highest order — a way of bringing home to where she is.
When she isn’t teaching in the community or playing with (who hit at Carnegie Hall tonight), the gifted Bandola llanera player and composer is teaching the world about joropo — a genre of music popular in Venezuela that is almost inexistent in the US. The style has African, native South American, and European influences and is a male-dominated musical form.
She joins us on the second night of collider!fest this year with her Pipiris Band — catch the dance lessons at 6PM followed by two sets of high energy, joyful music on the second stage. Guaranteed to open your heart and get your blood flowing.

Collider!Fest is is in just two weeks! Please join us in welcoming the lion 🦁 of afrobeat — the former frontman of Antibalas who is forging his own path with original members of the band this year — Duke Amayo.
If it hadn’t been for AMAYO , the afrobeat revival might have never happened at all. The young Duke came to the US from Nigeria on a soccer scholarship when he was 17 years old. In his words: ““I moved to NYC, opened up my Afrospot temple where I taught Kung Fu, put on fashion shows and where two guys came in and asked me to join a band. We were Antibalas. The rest is history.”
On Friday night, the Duke and his ensemble bring their positive spirit and New Afrika Shrine energy to .live . LFG ❤️🔥
