April’s Sustainability Spotlight is Ben Wood, the Assistant Director for Residential Facilities in the Office of Residential Life. In 2019, Ben joined the university as the Assistant Director for Summer Housing, later transitioning to his current position in the fall of 2023, where he serves as the key liaison to several campus partners in maintaining the buildings and coordinating transitions in the living spaces. Ben, while facilitating student move-in and move-out, saw the opportunity to partner with Building Services and establish a donations collection process, beginning with the Goodwill Bin donation program in the residential halls. Since then, Ben has continued to streamline and develop the process with campus partners and organizations to seek additional donation opportunities, including non-perishable food and leftover school supplies. The chance to donate items is now available during both the December and Spring move-out sessions. Ben reminds us to consider donating items that would otherwise go to waste, with the potential to have a second life with others, as this one small action by each of the almost 7000 students moving out in May can have a large impact on the greater community. Beyond campus, Ben enjoys spending time with his family, cherishing joyful moments with his wife and children, whether in the kitchen trying a new recipe or exploring the natural environment.
