🏡 Planning a home improvement project or business renovation in Oak Ridge North?
Before you begin work, it’s important to know whether a permit is required. Permits help ensure projects are completed safely, meet building codes, and protect property owners and neighbors.
Common projects that typically require permits include:
✔️ New construction and additions
✔️ Roofing projects
✔️ Fences
✔️ Swimming pools
✔️ Generators
✔️ Irrigation systems
✔️ Signs and commercial improvements
✔️ Electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and gas work that involves new installations, replacements, or modifications
Work that is generally exempt from permits includes:
• Interior painting, wallpaper, flooring, tiling, cabinets, countertops, and similar cosmetic finishes
• Playground equipment and swing sets
• Portable heating, cooling, and ventilation equipment
• Minor repairs such as clearing plumbing stoppages or repairing leaks that do not require replacing pipes or fixtures
• Replacing lamps and connecting portable electrical equipment to existing outlets
• Certain shallow prefabricated pools (less than 24 inches deep)
For commercial properties, some additional exemptions may apply, such as certain retaining walls under 4 feet, small water tanks, temporary stage sets, and limited agricultural shade structures.
Because every project is different, permit requirements can vary based on the scope of work. When in doubt, please contact the Building Department before starting your project.
