The darkness will end. I’ve been promised. Until then, I’m forcing a little light in.
The passing of my Mamma a few weeks ago has been hard in ways I couldn’t expect. To be motherless feels……..so untethered. Now each week as I spend time in her home dismantling her life, each item, a possession, a keepsake, a family heirloom are strings I’m unwinding from myself. Each memory one I store in my heart.
The second of 5 children , My Mamma was a Contra Costa County beauty queen. She was a gifted Pianist. She built her first hot rod at 18 and was secretary for West Coast Hotrod Association. She married a high school dropout out with huge ambition and drive. She was excited to start a family and I am blessed to be her first. She taught her children ( 10 in total) to be self sufficient and kind. She was a pioneer of “Free range parenting” Both my parents grew up with us all. We sold at Flea markets all over the bay area on sundays , traveled to the redwoods, stinson beach and monterey. We were a rambunctious bunch on backroads and mountain peaks in our trusty Volkswagen bus.
In 1977 my parents became pioneers and took our family into the desert of nevada to homestead. And build a large pool construction business.
it was teamwork that made the dream work! clearing land, constructing walls and roofs for a home. Planting trees, pulling up rocks. No one was too young to work and all did their part no matter the hot summer temps or freezing winter days. what an adventure to say the least. what a fire to be forged from.
After my Dads passing my Mamma made her way back to California. She designed a life of Treasure hunting, daily strolls and making good friends. She was blessed to fall in love again. with a man with 8 children!
Her passing was swift and unexpected. I barely left her side for over two weeks. We all have a moment , a time we are called to witness, advocate , support & Love to do the hardest thing to accompany our parents on their final walk HOME…..
