Over the weekend, we had the opportunity to meet safely with a group of our youth at our local water stream, Sausal Creek, in the Dimond District, Oakland, CA. We are venturing in groups more, especially outside like this past Saturday. We are continuing our Trail Brothers initiative by emphasizing the relaxing and therapeutic value of outdoor spaces, including local parks, which are so easy to get to and enjoy. Our interns and participants had a chance to learn and share different ways of combining breathing and quietness for an afternoon of mitigation from the hustle and bustle of urban living. Additionally, we spoke about rituals of gathering around fire pits, around each other at night, and how young men and men have done so for thousands of years passing on stories, strengthening ones culture while outdoors. We also played games of attention and focus with Japanese- leather covered-bamboo swords.
Overall, it was a wonderful day spent instilling in our youth a passion for the outdoors and the concept that these and other parks belong to all of us with the responsibility to take care of them for present and future generations.
