I had the opportunity to photograph the painter Thomas Bullard at his home studio. I love the process of collaborating with another creator and being in the space where they work. This was my first time seeing his paintings in person; they created a wonderful atmosphere - I could have spent a long time sitting with them. I could see the relationship between the person and the work - Thomas is very present, very patient. I loved the sense of the frame within the frame in our final images. I left feeling revived and inspired.

Photographing Lynn Hershman Leeson for the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University was one of the major highlights of last year. Lynn's pioneering work in multimedia art and her exploration of the intersection between technology and identity have significantly shaped contemporary art. The Archive Rooms installation at the Cantor provides a compelling look at her influential career and contributions; see more of her work at www.lynnhershmann.com

So lovely photographing Pamela and David Hornik on assignment for Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University with pieces from their incredible art collection. Teddy stole the show, he went to this spot and posed as if to say...I'm ready for my closeup!

Artists shown include (left to right):

Literacy is a civil right, and we have been failing to protect this right for our youth. Kuddos to Jessica Reid Sliwerski ski, who is confronting our national literacy crisis head on.

Jessica co-founded Ignite Reading in 2021, fueled by the knowledge that every child can learn to read and there is a proven way to teach them. Ignite Reading delivers data-driven, one-to-one virtual tutoring that teaches every student the foundational skills to become a fluent, confident reader. Students across all demographics achieve the same outstanding results–an average of 2.4 weeks of reading skills growth per week of instruction. By ensuring all students master the foundational skills to fluently read any word, Ignite Reading empowers them to move forward and unlock everything school and life have to offer.

Ignite Reading is now teaching thousands of students to read in districts across 13 states with further plans to expand nationwide.

It was a pleasure to photograph Jessica and hear her story; to see more of my portrait work, visit www.nancyrothstein.com
