On AI Appreciation Day, it’s critical that we acknowledge the opportunity and the responsibility that comes with adopting AI. We’re thinking about the people doing the careful, often invisible, work of responsible adoption.
We appreciate the public servants across the country, who are taking the time to be thoughtful about how we use this technology to make government services more effective and efficient.

AI in government is evolving quickly, but one thing remains clear: progress is uneven.
Some states are advancing rapidly, moving from early exploration to implementation and early signs of impact. Others are still developing policies, building internal expertise, and assessing where AI can be used responsibly. This variation isn’t surprising. AI adoption in the public sector depends on leadership, resources, workforce capacity, and trust.
What matters is having a clear understanding of where things stand today.
The Government AI Landscape Assessment is designed to provide a baseline, a snapshot of how states are progressing, and a tool for tracking that progress over time.
Whether you’re shaping policy, implementing programs, or supporting this work, the assessment offers a shared starting point for understanding the future of AI in government.

“Too many people can’t access government help—not because it doesn’t exist, but because the system is too complicated to navigate. Code for America fixes that. We build the tools that make it simple to sign up for food assistance, file for a tax refund, or find the services that can change your life,” explains Amanda Renteria, CEO of Code for America.
Code for America is proud to be featured in a new documentary series with USA TODAY. The series, America 250, shines a light on organizations changing lives throughout the United States in commemoration of the country’s 250th anniversary.
