Certified as a Clinical Trauma Professional since 2023, and renewed for another two years! Continuing education is incredibly important, and you can rest assured that it is a top priority for me as a clinician to continue learning new and varied approaches to the healing of PTSD, complex PTSD, and acute stress disorder, as well as the many other mental health disorders that are compounded by toxic stress and trauma.

There is no right time, no right choice. Use your best judgement, but do it now, do it scared, do it unsure, and course-correct with the information you gain as you go. Without a crystal ball, that's all you can do. You got this! (And if not, I'm here to help!)

Happy Daylight Savings! We've got an extra hour of sunlight to soak up, and while it won't fix everything, it /will/ help you feel better.
๐ฟ Green spaces lower cortisol (stress hormone).
โ๏ธ Sunlight raises serotonin levels (improves mood/anxiety) and helps to regulate your circadian rhythm (better sleep!).
๐ If you've got the ocean, a river, or a lake nearby, being near water helps to soothe your nervous system.
๐ถโโ๏ธThe rhythmic left-right motion of walking helps your nervous system shift from "fight or flight" to "rest and digest," and it helps engage both hemispheres of your brain for better problem solving!
๐ฃ But if you haven't got it in you to walk today, just standing barefoot in the grass helps you to shift into "rest and digest" too.
โจ You can begin to feel these effects in as little as 10 minutes outdoors.

Not every thought is true or helpful. It's easy to get caught in a cycle where negative thoughts take up all our mental bandwidth, keeping us stuck in an anxious or depressed state. Visualization is a powerful tool to create distance from our thoughts. Notice them, acknowledge them, and use your imagination to let them pass or set them aside.

I love this post in honor of mental health awareness month. People worry very deeply about showing up "the right way" for people who are struggling with mental health issues or even just big feelings and stressful events. While there are certainly "wrong" or harmful ways to approach folks who are struggling (for which I'm sure you can use your imagination), there is no one right way to show up for somebody who is hurting. The backbone of a positive approach is showing up, listening without judgment, and stretching in the direction of compassion. You don't have to understand everything. It doesn't have to all make sense to you. You don't have to fix the problem or have advice on what to do. Just be there, listen with tender curiosity, and let them know you care and you take them seriously.
"We suffer uniquely, but we survive the same way." - Cheryl Strayed. The surviving happens in the context of relationships with people that care. You are never alone. There is always an outstretched hand to be found somewhere if only we can sit with the vulnerability it takes to reach out and grab it.
Tell somebody you love that you love them, ask them how they're really doing, and have a good weekend, y'all.
