For two years, every AI tool we have used (Copilot, ChatGPT, even Claude when you used the chat box) has been an assistant. You asked a question, it answered. You asked for a draft, it wrote one. You still did the work.
What Microsoft just shipped inside M365 is different. It is an agent. You hand it a task and it actually does the task. Reads the files, edits the documents, runs the analysis, finishes the work, and reports back. You don't sit there prompting it through every step.
In plain English: the AI just stopped being your typing buddy and started being your actual coworker. That is why they called it Cowork.
