A new law will make it easier to build a tiny house in your back yard, starting next year • Virginia Mercury Amid a shortage of housing supply and noted affordability issues, ADUs have emerged as a way to boost affordable housing options in some areas or a way to meet the specific needs of some families. But not all Virginia localities allow them.

This kitchen is beginning to tell its story as custom cabinetry takes shape—rich walnut cabinetry paired with a deep green stained wood island that will anchor the entire space. While beautiful finishes often get the attention, projects like this are the result of hundreds of decisions made long before installation begins.

From cabinet layouts, appliance integration, storage planning, and traffic flow to paint colors, wood species, hardware, lighting, countertop selections, and architectural details—every choice plays a role in how the finished space feels and function.

Not every kitchen needs a complete gut renovation.

In this project, we kept the existing cabinetry, countertops, and layout, focusing instead on the finishes that would make the biggest impact. New floor tile, a fresh backsplash, updated lighting, a new door, and soft paint colors completely transformed the space.

By working with the kitchen’s existing strengths, we were able to create a brighter, more current look while avoiding the cost, disruption, and waste of a full renovation.

Sometimes the smartest design solution isn’t starting over—it’s seeing the potential that’s already there.
