In a study of 26 women, just one manicure caused levels of TPHP’s primary metabolite (DPHP) to spike 7x in urine within hours. This wasn't from breathing it in. The absorption came straight through the nail bed and skin. So what is TPHP? Triphenyl phosphate is a plasticizer added to many nail products to improve flexibility and sheen. It’s part of a class of organophosphate esters with known endocrine-disrupting potential. Here’s what the science shows: - DPHP is detected in over 97% of Americans (CDC, NHANES 2011–2020) - Nail salon workers have 4x higher levels than the general population - TPHP acts as both an estrogen mimic and a testosterone blocker in lab assays - It also alters thyroid hormones and activates PPAR-γ, promoting fat storage Human studies have linked higher exposure to: - Increased risk of pregnancy loss and lower embryo quality in IVF - Poorer sp3rm morphology and lower testosterone levels - Reduced overall fertility outcomes in both women and men Even “non-toxic” or “10-free” labeled polishes may still contain undisclosed TPHP or similar substitutes. Daily users, salon workers, and people planning to conceive may be especially vulnerable.
