On January 1, 1892, Ellis Island opened as the nation's first federal immigration station. For millions of immigrants arriving in New York Harbor, it was their first stop in America.

Between 1892 and 1954, more than 12 million people passed through Ellis Island seeking freedom, opportunity, and a better life. Their stories helped shape the communities, industries, and culture that define the United States today.

As we celebrate America's 250th anniversary, we remember the generations of immigrants whose dreams and determination helped build our nation.
