Rental scams are becoming more common, and we want to help our community stay protected.

If you’re searching for a rental, please watch for these common red flags:

🔎 Brand new or empty Facebook profiles
If the person posting the listing has a recently created profile with little to no posts, friends, or activity, proceed with caution.

💳 Requests for payment before a showing
You should NEVER be required to send money (application fees, deposits, “holding fees,” etc.) before you have viewed the property in person or verified the legitimacy of the company.

💰 Unusually low security deposits
If the security deposit is significantly less than the monthly rent, that can be a warning sign. Scammers often use “too good to be true” pricing to create urgency.

Additional tips:
• Verify the company’s website and phone number independently.
• Be cautious if the “owner” claims to be out of state or unavailable to meet.
• Never wire money or send funds through gift cards, Cash App, Venmo, Zelle, or cryptocurrency to someone you don’t know.

If something feels off, trust your instincts and do your research before sending money.
