River Birds; The American Dipper On the Cispus River, I watched the Dippers for days. From early in the morning, she flies the river and fishes for minnow and periwinkles. She lives all day- never leaving the river - each splash and dip and pool, its' whole life. At days end - pairs of dippers sit at the very edge of the water, face the constant gurgle and flow, and call in their sweet high voice - singing and singing and singing to the river, as if to say - soon it will be morning again and we will be here to spend our whole lives here, each and every day.

sketchbook.....learning to draw the river bird. The American Dipper lives her whole life on the river. She both swims and flies. She dives into rushing water, catching small fish. To spend time with the dipper is to learn to love the river, to sing to it morning and evening. She bobs and moves like the currents. Her home is exclusively the river.
