✨Swimmer Spotlight✨
Meet Charlie! He is 6 years old and on the Autism Spectrum with ADHD. When he first started lessons he didn't enjoy bath time. Anything having to do with water was labeled as "scary". Now? He is THRIVING! He looks forward to coming to the pool and each week makes more progress; with independent swimming, calming his body so he can be safe, and focusing on a specific task in an exciting environment.
When someone joins our program we aim to give them skills that will extend beyond their swim lessons. From Charlie's bravery to stand on a paddle board and more recently earning swimmer of the week at his camp...it's safe to say Charlie's success is emerging in other aspects of his life!
We are so proud of Charlie and are grateful to be part of his journey 🥰

✨Swimmer Spotlight✨
Meet Jacob! Jacob is a very sweet 14 year old whose family drives almost 30 minutes to the pool each week after having received a scholarship through The Violet Hour Foundation.
Jacob's mom says, "So many things are 'off limits' for Jacob because of his high level of need. This is the perfect opportunity for him. In the water he can feel happy. Feel fulfilled. Feel FREE from the weight of this world."
Thank you to The Violet Hour Foundation for sponsoring Jacob and the three other scholarship recipients for one on one lessons. And thank you to Jacob's family for trusting us to teach him. We've been enjoying every splash, smile, and sound he's made. Because we know that Jacob communicates differently and those loud, echoing sounds he makes...are his way of telling us that he does indeed feel happy, fulfilled, and free 🤍

It's been one week and we aren’t done bragging about how amazing the first Day of Commitment to Inclusive Water Safety was! Every family was able to choose between a variety of floats to practice being safe. We even had a special visit from OPD and they were kind enough to let one of our kids practice speaking on their radio! This is inclusion in action 🤍

For people with intellectual and/or developmental differences, pre-teaching can make all the difference when being safe at the pool!
Pre-teaching is reviewing guidelines and the reasons something is unsafe before placing expectations in the moment. Because when someone is excited to get in the pool, they may communicate it any way they can. Maybe that communication is throwing something less than ideal in the pool- like their shoes, towel, or even a phone. But with our community resource fair, we were able to provide pre-teaching in ways that support our swimmers' learning styles!
From cut/paste activities, to a find the lifeguard activity, scavenger hunt, sorting safe vs. unsafe things a swimmer does at the pool, and things that can vs. cannot go in a pool, every swimmer was able to make a connection from what they learned in the gym, to the things they do at the pool.
It was truly magical to see the 'lightbulb' moments when something resonated with a swimmer! 💡💡
