Childhood Anxiety vs. Adult Anxiety: What’s the Difference?
Anxiety doesn’t look the same at every age and for kids, it can be easy to miss.
👶 In children, anxiety often shows up as behavior:
• Clinginess or fear of being away from parents
• Stomachaches or headaches with no clear cause
• Avoiding school or activities
• Irritability, meltdowns, or trouble sleeping
• Constant “what if” worries
Children don’t always have the words to say “I feel anxious” so they show us instead.
👩🦳 In adults, anxiety is usually more internal:
• Racing thoughts or overthinking
• Stress about work, health, or finances
• Trouble concentrating or sleeping
• Physical tension or fatigue
Why this matters:
Early support makes a big difference. When we recognize anxiety in children, we can help them build healthy coping skills that last a lifetime.
If your child seems overwhelmed, avoidant, or “not themselves,” it may be more than just a phase. Compassionate Minds Therapy is here to support you and your family.
March is National Social Work Month 💙
At Compassionate Minds Therapy, we want to take a moment to recognize and celebrate the incredible therapists who serve our clients and community every single day.
