Tomorrow, August 23, a rare black moon rises that only happens every 33 months. A "black moon" refers to the third new moon in a season of four new moons, and this particular calendar quirk happens only about once every 33 months.

You won't actually see anything because during the new moon phase, the moon is positioned between Earth and the sun, making it invisible. But that's the point - it provides the darkest skies for stargazing and the best opportunity to see the Milky Way.

The next seasonal black moon won't occur again until August 20, 2028, making this weekend's event genuinely rare.

Perfect excuse to look up at the stars instead.
