Across New York, farmland will continue to change hands. With the average age of our farm owner at 57, a generation is in the process of aging out. Given the recent trends, there’s a real risk these farms may be sold off or left to idle.

For many farm owners, the question of what comes next is not only financial, but deeply personal. It’s about stewardship, legacy, and whether the land they’ve tended for will continue to be cared for into the future.

At the same time, an incoming generation of farmers need secure, affordable land access. They’re ready to feed their communities, build businesses, and put down roots, but face the barriers of the high cost of land and high interest rates.

These two realities, while closely connected, don’t always meet face to face.

Our Land Access Program is working to change that. We know successful farmland transitions mean working with both sides: helping landowners navigate succession planning with clarity and confidence, while also supporting farm seekers with equitable access and long-term viability.

When transitions are done well, farmland stays in farming, production continues, and communities remain connected to the land that feeds them.
