MyHometown – City of Orem 07/20/2024

"Orem is set to welcome the MyHometown Initiative, which is a partnership between the City, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other local religious institutions, partnering community organizations, and community members. Over the past several years, this initiative has launched successfully in four other Utah cities (Provo City, Salt Lake City, West Valley City, and Ogden City) and is aimed at improving the lives of and opportunities for residents."

I'm excited about this program coming to my adopted hometown of Orem. It's not a public welfare program that compels people to "help" each other as politicians dictate, thankfully, but it's a volunteer organization that both mobilizes and organizes residents to freely love-and-serve each other in various ways, which include teaching useful skills (like speaking English as a second language, playing the piano, sewing, using computers, et cetera), cleaning-up yards, and improving homes.

MyHometown – City of Orem “The strength of our City lies in its people, and we are excited for this new initiative that will uplift and strengthen our residents. We are working closely with MyHometown to tailor the programs and resources to the needs of our residents, and we believe this will truly transform the community ...

Sub for Santa: Young family needs help this Christmas as father pursues medical school 12/11/2023

Hey, fellow Oremites, here's one of many great opportunities to help a needy family this Christmastime, which I welcome all to consider.

Such opportunities abound if only we bother to notice them or even to seek them. We might find them in nursing homes or in addiction clinics or in homeless shelters.

I remind those who are religious that God can help us to find such opportunities as we turn to Him in prayer. Although we can never do everything, we can always do something. Moreover, freely choosing to love/serve our neighbors as ourselves carries a side-benefit of reducing socialists' excuses to perpetrate legalized plunder---forcibly taking is never as good as freely giving. What if we were figuratively in their shoes?
