Contrary to popular belief, these ant-like mounds are actually a result of ground digger wasps, also known as Cicada Killer Wasps. They fly low to the ground and are mostly passive-aggressive towards humans but will sting if threatened. Their main targets are, as their name implies, Cicadas.
