The open hopper's basic design dates back to the late 1800s, with one of the first mass produced models being PRR's GLa hopper in 1905. An open top allowed for coal and other aggregates to be loaded, with a sloped interior leading the load into bays on the bottom for unloading. Larger designs would hit the rails like the 70 ton offset ARA hopper, and numerous 100 ton designs.

Trinity Steel entered the railcar market in 1984 after acquiring the blueprints for cars built by Pullman-Standard and several other manufacturers in the following years. In 1995, Trinity introduced the 3-bay 5161 cu. ft. 3-bay covered hopper which can seen moving bulk agricultural and industrial products, loaded through hatches at the top, and unloaded through chutes on the bottom.
