Spadone: A Surfing Odyssey
My story begins South-of-the-border where my Grandfather passed-away in a tragic surfing accident. He left behind three-sons and a dream.
Life in Baja is a true adventure. Our family arrived in a converted 1950’s milk-van packed with boards, shorts, and diapers. The three-sons, Michael, Paul, and Walt-Junior, were golden-haired groms that grew-up to be real gringos– like their father.
After fulfilling their barbarian-days and having a few groms of their own, destiny carried the brothers back-home to the same-wave that took their father’s life. In a beautiful moment of realization, they decided to hold-back their tears and build a house in his memory.
The late Walt Spadone dreamt of raising a family-of-surfers, and speaking as his eldest grandson, I believe he succeeded. With three-sons and eight grandchildren– each of us are indisputably tethered to the sea.
After 25-years of happy-living and passionate-surfing in our holy-waters, our beloved home caught-fire and burned to the ground. Some of us almost lost our lives that night, but Baja gave us a second-chance.
Without hesitation, our fourth-generation of Spadone’s started rebuilding and we are reclaiming our history in surfing folklore. Thank you to the many families that have helped contribute to the rebuilding process.
