Commander Edgar Fernandez has been selected as the Oxnard Police Department’s newest Assistant Police Chief.

Edgar was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley. He attended Reseda High School and later earned a Bachelor’s Degree from California State University, Northridge. He is currently completing a graduate degree in Public Safety Leadership and Administration at Arizona State University.

In 2007, he began his law enforcement career with the City of San Fernando Police Department. While at SFPD, Edgar served as a Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, Area Lead Officer, and Special Investigations Unit Officer. He was also a member of the department’s Special Response Team and served on the board of the San Fernando Police Officers Association.

Edgar joined the Oxnard Police Department in 2011 as a lateral hire. He served as a Patrol Officer and Field Training Officer, and was a member of both the Defensive Tactics Unit and Crisis Negotiations Team. He was later assigned to the Investigative Services Bureau, where he worked in the Violent Crimes Unit investigating robberies, violent assaults, and gang-related crimes.

In 2015, Edgar was recognized as the Oxnard Police Department’s Officer of the Year while assigned to the Violent Crimes Unit. He later served in the Major Crimes Unit, investigating homicides and other critical incidents.

In 2017, Edgar was promoted to Sergeant, where he served as a field supervisor. In 2020, he was selected as the Major Crimes Sergeant. He also served on the executive board of the Oxnard Peace Officers Association from 2015 through 2022.

Throughout his career, Edgar has remained committed to the professional development of his fellow officers. He was instrumental in creating the department’s internal leadership program, "The Oxnard Way." In 2020, he also helped develop OPD University, a departmental training program that he has overseen since 2023. Edgar was responsible for implementing the department’s Principled Policing program and recently helped create the Oxnard Police Department’s Community Orientation Program, which gives newly hired officers the opportunity to meet with members of the community before beginning patrol assignments, reinforcing community partnership as a core departmental value.

In 2023, Edgar was promoted to Commander and assigned as a Patrol Watch Commander. He was later selected as the Patrol Support Services Commander. In 2025, he was assigned as the Professional Standards Commander. Upon official promotion - effective Saturday, June 6th, he will oversee the Field Services Bureau.

SUBJECT: Assault with a Deadly Weapon / Robbery Suspects Arrested

On May 10, 2026, at approximately 8:15 PM, officers from the Oxnard Police Department responded to the parking structure at The Collection, 2701 Riverpark Blvd, regarding an armed robbery. Three victims told officers they were inside the parking structure when multiple male suspects armed with fi****ms approached them. The suspects demanded the victims' property, and one victim was pistol-whipped in the head, causing lacerations. The suspects fled the area after taking property from the victims. The injured victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.

Investigators from the Oxnard Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) took over the investigation. Investigators gathered sufficient evidence to identify two suspects as 17-year-old males from Oxnard and Port Hueneme. VCU Investigators obtained search warrants for two residences in Oxnard and Port Hueneme.

On May 27, 2026, members of the Oxnard Police Department's SWAT Team, K9 Unit, and VCU served search warrants at residences in the 2100 block of Isabella St. in Oxnard and the 2600 block of Tiller Ave. in Port Hueneme.

Two juvenile suspects were located and arrested at the locations. They were both lodged at the Juvenile Justice Center for assault with a deadly weapon and second-degree robbery.
